Both focus on comfort by easing pain, symptoms, and stress. Palliative care can begin at any stage of a serious illness and can be given alongside treatments meant to cure. Hospice is a form of palliative care for when curative treatment is no longer the goal, usually with a life expectancy of six months or less. How do we get started, and what is the admission process?

How quickly can care begin?

Often within twenty-four hours, and sometimes the same day when the need is urgent. Once we receive a referral, our team moves quickly to assess needs and put comfort measures in place. If you are in the middle of a difficult moment, please call us. We are here to respond gently and without delay.

Can we leave hospice or change our mind?

Yes, at any time and for any reason. If you decide to pursue curative treatment again, or your condition improves, you can step out of hospice and return later if you become eligible. Choosing hospice is never a locked door. You stay in control of your care every step of the way.

What does hospice cover, and who pays for it?

Hospice is covered by the Medicare Hospice Benefit, by Medicaid in most states, and by most private insurance plans. Coverage typically includes visits from the care team, medications related to your illness, medical equipment and supplies, and support for your family. Our team travels to you for regular visits, and for patients in our care, on-call support means we are available by phone when you need us. Who is on the hospice care team?

Your care is guided by an interdisciplinary team working together for you. That includes physicians and nurse practitioners, registered and licensed nurses, home health aides, social workers, chaplains, bereavement coordinators, and trained volunteers. Can my own doctor stay involved?

Yes, and we welcome it. Your personal physician can remain an active part of your care team and work alongside our hospice doctors. We coordinate closely with them to honor your history, your wishes, and the relationship you already trust. You should never feel handed off.

What support is there for my family, during and after?

Hospice cares for the whole family, not only the patient. During care, our social workers and chaplains offer emotional and spiritual support, practical guidance, and a steady presence through hard days. After a loss, our bereavement team continues to walk with your family for up to thirteen months, with counseling and grief support whenever you need it. Grief has no schedule, and neither does our care.
